Foil + Foliage in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden

For Taryn and Adam's wedding in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, we designed a custom foil + letterpress motif based on the garden's Palm House. Take a look at the inspiration:

We carried parts of the artwork through to reply cards, menus, programs, and even the envelopes.

Fluorescent Festivities | Neon Nuptials

These might be my favorite client-designed invitations this year. The bride, Nisha, designed three different invites for her various California wedding festivities.

All three have a common feel — employing the same border art, black ink, and copperplate type. But Nisha used different title art for each and we printed them with three different fluorescent letterpress inks — neon orange, deep magenta, a bright pink. We finished each set with three different edge paints — electric blue, highlighter yellow, and metallic silver.

Finally, we used the neon orange ink to print the flap of the fluorescent white envelope.

And what the hell, how about a few more photos...

Antique Black Champagnium

Back in April of 2015 we printed some excellent business cards for designer Amanda Benincasa. And then a few months later, she asked us to print her wedding invitations.

The background floral image is actually just Pantone black ink — but when printed on the black Rising Museum Board, it creates a sort of bronze effect (take a look at our tintype photo frames for the same combo in a different setting). And for the text, we did a custom mix of gold and silver to match Envelopments Champagnium stock.

For the reply cards we used the same ink but with our pearl white cotton paper for easier writing.

Ontario Blossoming

Gabriel & Aida saw two of our most popular wedding invitations, our Ontario and Blossom styles, and asked, "why choose?". Why not Ontariossom? Or Blosstario?

With our help, they combined the modern typefaces and sleek black / white / silver color scheme of our Ontario style with the classic floral motif from our Blossom design.

Four Inks on Black for Alex Jackson Studio

Letterpress printing on black paper can pose challenges. Most letterpress inks are transparent, so they're not going to show up on a black background. One exception is silver. Silver ink is mostly opaque (about 80%), so if you're sneaky, you can print a silver ink run on the black paper to create a lighter base, then print any color you'd like on top.

For Alex Jackson Studio we started with thick 4-ply black museum board and a silver ink run. Then we added the red rose artwork and a subtle yellow stamen, leaving a super-thin silver outline and tiny silver veins. On top of the red, we printed a gray halftone gradation to create shading (check out our halftone blog post if you're not sure what that is).

This technique requires really tight registration, but it allows for an effect you don't see often with letterpress. Our PDX sports fan coasters were done the same way. More photos of Alex's cards are below.

Foiled & Monogrammed

We love type-only designs. This one's got a simple monogram in Italic Garamond along with text in Neutra Light and Sloop Script.

We used a custom paper -- two sheets of Dark Gray 350g Colorplan duplexed to create a nice, thick 700g stock. The card was printed with silver foil, finished with silver edge paint, and paired with a pearl white cotton envelope.
